A personal note from Tim…

You’ve spent your career working toward this, and you’re finally there. You’ve reached the top of the organisational food chain.

It’s perfectly normal that you have some trepidations and concerns heading into this assignment. I’d venture to say something would probably be MORE wrong if you didn’t have a level of anxiety taking on such a weighty position, whether your organisation is 12 people, 512 or 5012.

I have spent more than 15 years working with C-level executives, helping them navigate those choppy early waters of running an organisation. I rarely find someone who doesn’t have the business knowledge to take over their position, but what I find much of the time is that the new CEO could do with an upgrade in strategic people skills, both in analysis and communication.

As a new CEO, whether you were promoted from within or are an outside-the-company hire, you probably wouldn’t have been given this new post if you didn’t display a strong understanding of the business side of the equation. But, what you’re going to find is that the minute you step into that CEO role, it’s a whole different ballgame.

Instead of being in a position where you don’t know what you don’t know, the new CEOs I work with quickly come to understand the breadth of their influence and recognize that’s when they need my assistance. Business acumen isn’t often the problem. It’s learning to navigate the people part of the job.

About Tim Ferris

Tim Ferris is one of Australia’s leading strategic advisors to CEOs having had particular success in leading, coaching, and developing CEOs who are new to their role to unlock their leadership genius. He has served as a business advisor for the past 15 years, along with leading companies and large mission-based not-for-profits.

Tim is a firm believer that the failure or success of a business comes from the organisation’s culture and it is imperative that a CEO understands and guides that culture from day one on the job. Unfortunately, the demands of the new position can be so daunting, culture is ignored if the newly minted CEO isn’t careful.

After successfully working with hundreds of C-Level Executives, Tim has finally put his knowledge into a new book, CEO Strategy: Getting It Right The First Time! Breaking down what a new CEO has to think about both prior to beginning their duties, and what needs to be done when they step through the door, CEO Strategy: Getting It Right The First Time! is a must-read for anybody stepping up to the top of the corporate food chain for the first time.

Tim’s keen insight on human behaviour, natural leadership skills, and years of experience, coupled with his unique way of getting a point across will be a breath of fresh air for anybody tired of boring, monotonous business tomes.

CEO Strategy: Getting It Right The First Time! is also a valuable resource for any Board of Directors or executive-level management. In this ever-changing world of technology and globalisation, there has never been a more critical time to ensure you have a culture where your people thrive and produce excellent results.

“Culture is like soil,” Tim has been known to tell his CEO clients. “If you take a healthy seed and plant it in healthy soil, that seed will thrive. Take that same seed, and place it in unhealthy soil, even though the seed itself is healthy, it will still struggle in unhealthy soil. Your organisation’s culture is the soil your people are placed in, and its health will determine how productive and successful they can be. It’s that important!”
